S. Galgano and the sword in the stone
Through the beautiful wooded hills of the River Merse,
walking along an ancient transhumance
road between the Apennines and the Maremma region, we get
to the imposing and very suggestive ruins of a Gothic-
Cistercian abbey which stands amidst wheat fields. Once
we have visited the famous church " without a roof " and
the remains of the adjoining abbey we will climb up to
the hermitage of Monte Siepi which for the last 900 years
has guarded the sword which S. Galgano
planted in the stone.
Difficulty: simple excursion of naturalistic, historical
and artistic interest.
Duration : half-day
Extension: It is possible to combine this tour with an
excursion to the Abbey of S. Antimo to spend an unforgettable
full day in medieval religious Tuscany.

From Montalcino to S. Antimo:
The stone that sings
We leave Montalcino and take a downhill path going through
a characteristic medieval village and then a thick wood
suddenly coming to the evocative abbey of S. Antimo which
is set in a fairytale landscape. The surprising brightness
together with a Romanesque design make this structure unique.
Once inside we shall be enshrouded by the overwhelming
melody of a Gregorian chant performed by the monks during
one of their moments of prayer.
Difficulty: simple excursion, of naturalistic, historical,
artistic and cultural interest.
Duration: half day.
Extension: It is possible to visit the Abbey of
S. Galgano on the same day to live an unforgettable all-absorbing
experience in the medieval religious Tuscany.
From Buonconvento to Monte Oliveto: le Crete senesi
From the fortified village of Buonconvento, stonghold
of the old Via Francigena, we slowly make our way through
the ongoing cycle of changing colours, a maze of white
and greyish hues which are "Crete Senesi".In
this mystic and inspiring setting we can enjoy spectacular
views from the erosion furrows. Once at the picturesque
village of Chiusure, we take a small downhill slope
which will lead us to the magnificent Benedictine Abbey
of Monte Oliveto.
