Held in the warm embrace of olive groves,
in an unspoilt corner of the hills of Pisa, is the very
suggestive monastery of the Carthusian monks of Calci.
It was built in the 14th century by the followers of the
order of San Bruno and it later became one of the most
important and wealthiest monasteries in Tuscany. The interior
was completely renovated and decorated with works by important
18th century artists. Its Baroque frescoes are still among
the most important in Tuscany. It is today one of the most
interesting national museums (admission fee)
